How to choose the best Japanese Hair Dye?
There are 5 things you need to consider when choosing the Japanese hair color.
#1 — Form of Japanese hair dye
There are primarily three forms of Japanese hair dyes available:
- Foam
Japanese foam hair dyes are the best option for beginners. Foam hair dyes are as easy to use as shampoo. Unlike other hair dyes, you don’t have to section your hair or worry about stains, or color brush.
However, the end result may not be as vivid as a cream hair dye. Make sure to evenly coat your hair with the foam dye. Before you apply it, make sure to foam it up well and the flatter the foam, the lesser the chance it has to stick to your hair.
- Cream
Cream hair dyes are for experts. If you’ve colored your hair at home before and know what you’re doing then cream hair dyes are the best option. The resulting color is stronger as the cream sticks to your hair better than foam or lotion type hair dye.
Only con about cream dye is that you can easily miss a spot which can result in uneven coloring. We recommend that you section your hair in six to seven parts and dye each section one by one to ensure an even coat.
#2 — Shade and Color
You’ll find lots of different colors and shades. Bigger and more popular hair dye brands offer over 20 to 30 different shades. Hair colors like pink, ash, and beige are trending in Japan right now – but that doesn’t mean it’s meant for you. Also, the same color or shade belonging to two different brands can yield different results.
So before you choose a Japanese hair color, figure out which color, shade, tone would suit you the best.
Ultimately, your original hair color is going to affect the results. Most hair dyes show a before and after pictures of different hair colors. So figure out which original hair color in the ‘before’ pictures matches yours and check the ‘after’ picture to see if that’s the result you’re looking for.
#3 — Check the ingredients, and Included Treatments and Hair Care Products
Maintaining and taking care of your hair after you’ve dyed it is the real challenge. Two things you need to focus on: one is ensuring the color doesn’t fade too soon and secondly, minimize the damage caused by the hair dye.
Look for hair dyes that include hair nourishing ingredients like hydrolyzed keratin and jojoba oils. Ingredients that will help minimize and repair hair damage and also provide moisture to the hair strands.
Sadly, no matter how much you love coloring your hair or no matter how much the hair dye product claims to be healthy – it will cause a certain amount of damage to your hair. So make sure to look for hair dyes that come with hair treatment or serum that can minimize or control the hair damage.
#4 — Efficacy
Before you purchase a hair dye, find out how long the hair color lasts. DIY Hair colors from reputed brands usually last for about a month but some others might last for even 2 weeks.
The color you choose plus the health of your hair – both determine how long a good hair dye will last.
Make sure to read the reviews. Look for reviews by people with your original hair color or at least close to see if the hair color sticks.
Maintain your hair after you’ve dyed it is also important for the hair color to stay longer. Use
shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments that are specially meant for color-treated hair.
#5 — Quantity
If you’re buying just one hair dye box then make sure there’s enough amount of product to cover your hair. Otherwise you may have uneven coloring, especially if you’re not able to apply enough dye.
The quantity should be mentioned in the box. One dye box usually is enough to color medium-length to slightly long hair.
However, if you have thick, long hair, we recommend you buy an extra box to be safe.
Don’t Skip the Patch Test
Hair dyes are categorized as a drug in Japan as it uses ingredients that can cause allergic reactions like skin irritation, itchiness, and rashes in our bodies. Don’t dye your hair yourself, if you’ve experienced this before.
Make sure that you read the instructions given on the hair dye box before you start applying the hair dye. Make sure to conduce a patch test at least 2 days before you actually dye your hair.
You will be given instructions on the box on how to do a patch test. Patch test is usually done by applying a little bit of the product on your arm and observing your skin thereafter.
