Nana Manga Artist Ai Yazawa Unveils Exclusive Uniqlo T-Shirt Line

Celebration of Ai Yazawa’s 40-Year Journey in Shojo Manga

Ai Yazawa commemorates four decades in the manga industry with the launch of a special collection in collaboration with Uniqlo, named the Ai Yazawa Collection.

While her body of work may not rival others in sheer volume, the emotional depth and cultural impact of her stories resonate widely with fans.

El Ai Yazawa Collection features five distinct T-shirt designs, each drawing from her most notable series.

One highlight includes a brand-new illustration crafted specifically for this collection, showcasing Yazawa’s unique artistic style.

A focal point of the collection is her acclaimed series, Nana.

The shirt dedicated to this work illustrates members of the band Black Stones, led by the series’ protagonist, Nana Osaki.

This visual tribute signifies not only the character’s influential role but also her lasting appeal in contemporary culture.

Another design celebrates Tenshi Nanka ja Nai, Yazawa’s breakout series.

The title translates to “I’m No Angel,” which contrasts interestingly with the angelic appearance of Midori Saejima in the depicted outfit.

This dress, taken from the sixth volume of the manga, embodies a dreamy quality that fans can appreciate.

The collection also includes shirts inspired by Paradise Kiss y Neighborhood Story.

Both series delve into the world of fashion, and the shirts reflect this theme with understated symbols from the narratives.

They bridge the gap between fictional and everyday style, appealing to both fans and fashion enthusiasts alike.

Additionally, the fifth shirt features the new illustration of Nana Osaki, reaffirming her iconic status in the manga universe.

Nana began serialization in 2000 and, while on hiatus since 2009, continues to pique interest.

The artwork hints at the character’s undiminished coolness, serving as a reminder of the series’ ongoing legacy.

Uniqlo has a penchant for collaborating with popular franchises, typically offering anime and manga T-shirts in men’s cuts.

However, in keeping with Yazawa’s focus on shojo themes, the Ai Yazawa Collection comprises women’s shirts.

Each design is priced at 1,500 yen (around US$10.35) and is set to release in early July.

Fans can expect availability at Uniqlo locations across Japan as well as through their online platform.
