Floating Islands of Osaka Expo In Virtual Reality
Overview
The Osaka Kansai Expo, set to open on April 13, 2025, aims to redefine accessibility at world exhibitions.
For the first time, individuals unable to attend in person will be able to explore the event through virtual reality.
This innovative approach is made possible by the Virtual Expo-Yumeshima Islands in the Sky app, which I will be able to download for free in early April.
Key Features of the App:
- Compatibility: The app will work on smartphones, tablets, and personal computers and is also compatible with certain VR goggles.
- Virtual Exploration: Users can create custom avatars to navigate a metaverse featuring 12 floating islands, gates, pavilions, and notable highlights of the expo, including a significant roof ring.
- Pavilion Design: Each participating country or region has crafted unique designs for the exterior and interior of their virtual pavilions.
Inside these pavilions, I can experience a variety of displays.

These will not only mirror what exists in the real world but also include alternative presentations and videos, allowing for a richer experience tailored to a virtual environment.
Interactions are facilitated through text messages, stamps, and gestures, enabling communication with other virtual attendees.
Accessibility Initiatives
The expo organizers are also working to ensure inclusivity for those unable to visit the venue.
Plans are in place to bring necessary devices to nursing homes and similar locations, enabling access to the expo’s offerings.
Goals and Vision
Though advance ticket sales are currently at half of the 14 million target, the app serves a dual purpose.
It acts as a “digital catalog” not just for those unable to attend but also encourages visits to the physical venue.
It emphasizes that the full expo experience includes the activities and culinary offerings available only on-site.
The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition aspires for a total of 200 million accesses to the virtual platform.
Developed by an NTT group company at no charge, this initiative represents a significant step forward in the evolution of world expositions.
