An Artful Way to Show Off Green Maple Leaves at a Studio in Kyoto
At the dyeing studio Arashiyama Yusai-tei, situated in Ukyo Ward, an extraordinary experience awaits. This location features a stunning display of green maple trees, which beautifully reflect on a polished surface within the studio.
The studio’s owner, Yusai Okuda, transformed the former ryokan inn into a public gallery. Visitors can admire the vibrant maples through elegantly crafted round windows.
A delightful terrace allows guests to witness the trees’ reflections dancing on a water mirror created by water droplets from a brush.
This historic site is also known for being the inspiration behind Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata’s novel “Yama no Oto” (The Sound of Mountains).
In the room where he composed his work, I find decorative goldfish bowls with artificial hydrangeas, enhancing the serene ambiance.
Visitors aged 13 and above are welcome to explore the studio from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an admission fee of 2,000 yen ($13.80).
While reservations are preferred for a seamless experience, I note that the studio is closed on Thursdays.
