Ishiba Plea Fails to Stop Trump Diatribe About Trade with Japan
On April 7, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba engaged in a 25-minute call with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding trade relations. Ishiba expressed concerns that these tariffs might adversely affect the investment capabilities of Japanese businesses in the U.S. market.
During our conversation, we reached a mutual agreement to appoint members of our respective Cabinets to facilitate ongoing trade discussions.
This approach aims to streamline negotiations at a ministerial level rather than continuing direct talks between the highest offices. Ishiba indicated his intent to visit the U.S. at an appropriate time to meet with Trump face-to-face.

On his side, Trump reiterated his frustration regarding the trade deficit with Japan. He emphasized on social media that he had prior discussions with Ishiba and mentioned Japan’s intent to send a high-level team for trade negotiations.

Trump criticized the trade dynamics, claiming that Japan has not reciprocated adequately in various sectors, including automotive and agricultural commodities.
This exchange highlights the ongoing complexities in U.S.-Japan trade relations, as both nations seek a path forward amidst differing economic priorities.
