Sharingan and Rinnegan are some of the mystic and powerful abilities that are present in the world of Naruto.
These powers are displayed through the eyes of a shinobi but there are only a rare few who can conjure these powers as it takes a great deal of expertise, strength, and power to possess them.

Although both Sharingan and Rinnegan are among the strongest powers in the Naruto world there’s a dispute among fans as to which one is better or stronger than the other.

What are Sharingan and Rinnegan in Naruto
Role of Sharingan and Rinnegan in Naruto
Naruto Uzumaki is the son of the Fourth Hokage of Konoha village, Minato Namikaze. When the village was attacked by the Nine-Tail Fox, Minato attempts to seal the fox inside Naruto’s body which ultimately kills Minato and makes Naruto the host of the fox.
When Naruto grows up he learns about the events that occurred in his early life and Naruto wanted to become the leader of the village and a powerful shinobi.
Since Naruto was obsessed with being an invincible man he needed to acquire powers and that’s how he comes to learn about Sharingan and Rinnegan.
Origin of Sharingan in Naruto
The Sharingan means Mirror Wheel Eye or Copy Wheel Eye which is a Kekkei Genkai of the members of the Uchiha Clan and one of the Three Great Dojutsu. Kekkei Genkai refers to the powers that can only be transferred through the lineage.
Hence, the Sharingan power belongs to the members of the Uchiha clan because they’re born with it and can only be wielded by them.
If anyone outside the clan wishes to wield the Sharingan power they can only do this by removing their eyeballs and replacing them with the eyeballs of an Uchiha clan member.
Of course, it’s a painful process and it’d take extreme practice and strength to wield the Sharingan, and finding a donor to transplant the eye isn’t something that can be done instantly. The Uchiha Clan was considered one of the most powerful clans due to their Sharingan abilities and they were also feared by other clans.
The Sharingan power was feared by many ninjas because anyone who wields it transcends beyond their consciousness and makes them extremely invincible.
When a member of the Uchiha clan awakens the Sharingan power their eyes turn into a dark red color, the pupil minimizes in size and three small tomoe ( a comma-like shape) appear around the eye.

Origin of Rinnegan in Naruto
The Rinnegan means Samsara Eye or the Eye of the Six Paths which is one of the Three Great Dojutsu and a Kekkei Genkai ability that can only be wielded by a selective group of people.
The Rinnegan eye is regarded as the most elevated power out of the Three Great Dojutsu. The Rinnegan eye is a rare ability that only six mighty characters in the Naruto franchise have reportedly wielded.
If one was to wield the Rinnegan eye during times of uncertainty or confusion then he or she will be granted immense power to either retain peace in the world or annihilate it to bits.
The Rinnegan power came into existence when Kaguya ate a fruit in the Shinju’s tree which blessed her with chakra powers and she was able to learn and master all the Jutsu skills.
Hence, she was called the mother of ninja skills and ocular powers like Sharingan and Rinnegan. Since Rinnegan is also a Kekkei Genkai it can only be wielded by her descendants.
Once the wielder activates the Rinnegan eye their eye color would change to a purplish-gray shade, their pupil shrinks and small six black tomoe appear around the shrunken pupil.
Abilities of Sharingan and How It’s Wielded
The two impressive abilities the Sharingan provides its wielders are The Eye of Insight and The Eye of Hypnotism both of which have distinct powers.
The Eye of Insight allows the wielder to give a color to their chakra, making them visible. It grants them quick reflexes which helps them to predict every movement of the opponent so that they can dodge or counter attack. They can read the lips of the opponent and witness quick-moving objects. The wielder can also copy any jutsu movements of their attackers and use them during battles.
The Eye of Hypnotism allows the wielder to hypnotize and take complete control of the opponent’s body and mind and command them to perform certain actions.
When a member from the Uchiha clan feels extreme emotions like love or anger then their brain emits a special chakra that affects the optic nerves in the eye.
Once this occurs their eyes turn into the red-eyed Sharingan and they feel an overwhelming rush of emotions and stress running across their body and mind. When a wielder does this for the first time the feeling is unpleasant due to the reactions in the body.
When one is feeling utmost emotional the awakened Sharingan can cause their eyesight to blur for a short period of time.
Once the wielder gets used to it and perceives the Sharingan is awakened they can wield it without a problem. The Sharingan also develops as the wielder continues to activate them. During the first few times, the Sharingan eyes will have one tomoe. If the wielder undergoes intense emotional moments then the Sharingan would mature and the eyes would have three tomoe.
The wielder can make use of all of the Sharingan’s abilities from the beginning and doesn’t necessarily have to wait for it to mature to wield a mature Sharingan. However, with a developed Sharingan the wielder can assure more precision in their movements during combats.
The Sharingan eyes can be transplanted to a person who’s an outsider to the Uchiha clan. It takes great time and practice to wield the Sharingan eye for an outsider. In addition, they’re also unable to deactivate the Sharingan hence they cover their eyes. The Sharingan in a non-Uchiha requires more chakra to keep them active, unlike Uchihas who don’t need much chakra.
Abilities of Rinnegan and How It’s Wielded
When a user wields the Rinnegan eye they are open to a wider range of abilities. The wielder can see chakra and also hidden barriers that cannot be seen through the ordinary eye. The wielder with the Rinnegan is able to master all the five nature transformations.
The Rinnegan offers the wielder a set of techniques called the Six Paths Technique and they are:
- Naraka Path - This path allows one to communicate with the King of Hell and seek help if the wielder wants to interrogate someone.
- Animal Path - This allows to summon and control giant animals and order them to cause annihilation.
- Human Path - This helps to read one’s mind.
- Asura Path - This allows the user to wield advanced weapons during battles.
- Preta Path - This path allows the wielder to absorb chakra and use it to counterattack with intense power.
- Diva Path - This path allows the wielder to have control over gravity and push or pull an object or a person with intense force.
A final Path is offered to the wielder if they’re powerful enough to use it which is called the Outer Path. This allows the wielder to have control over life or death.
In addition, the users of Rinnegan have access to obtain special tools during battles. The Rinnegan can also be transplanted and their powers remain the same as before in the new person.
The Rinnegan always stays activated but however consumes little chakra compared to the Sharingan.
Can Sharingan evolve into Rinnegan?
The Sharingan can evolve into the Rinnegan over time by the combination of DNA. The DNA that’s required to evolve the Sharingan into the Rennigen are Uchiha’s and Senju’s.
However, it’s not an easy task as there are only 2 people in the history of Naruto who successfully pulled it off. They’re Madara and Sasuke. Madara was able to do this by using Senju’s piece of flesh he found after a battle with him.
Madara who was an Uchiha implanted the DNA of Senju in him hence he was able to evolve the Sharingan into Rinnegan. To awaken the Rinnegan the wielder has to acquire the chakra of the Six Paths.
