Ken Kaneki is the main protagonist of the series. He starts off the series as a human who is a student of Japanese literature at Kamii University. Ken decides to come out of his comfort zone by going out on a date with Rize. 

However, Rize reveals herself to be a ghoul and tries to eat him but Ken is saved by a construction accident and then Rize’s organs are transplanted to him. Ken eventually becomes a half-ghoul who comes across several people like him.

He has many nicknames based on different things like his appearance and his kakuja form’s appearance. His nicknames include Eyepatch (眼帯, Gantai), Centipede (ムカデ, Mukade), Black Reaper (黒い死神, Kuroi Shinigami), and One-Eyed King (隻眼の王, Sekigan no Ō).

Rize Kamishiro (神代 利世, Kamishiro Rize)

Rize Kamishiro is another main character in the Tokyo Ghoul series. She is a ghoul and is nicknamed Binge Eater (大喰い Ōkui, "Binge Eater" or "Gluttony", literally "Big Eater"), and Dragon  (竜, Ryū).

She is the illegitimate daughter of Tsuneyoshi Washuu, the former chairman of CCG, and the foster daughter of Matasaka Kamishiro. Rize is a ghoul in a human disguise which was how she managed to fool Ken and go out with him.

She is referred to as subject Number 745 and Daughter in the files of the CCg, who failed to eliminate her due to lack of information. 

Nishiki Nishio (西尾 錦, Nishio Nishiki)

Nishiki Nishio is a ghoul and the boyfriend of Kimi Nishino. His original feeding ground was taken over by Rize Kamishiro. He eventually starts working as a waiter at Anteiku and becomes an ally to Kaneki. 

He was nicknamed Serpent (オロチ, Orochi) by the CCG because he kills other ghouls after they give him information. 

Hideyoshi Nagachika (永近 英良, Nagachika Hideyoshi)

Big Madam (ビッグマダム, Biggu Madamu)

Big madam was a very influential ghoul and had a lot of power in a sizeable black market. She was obese and had strawberry blonde hair. She was never shown wearing a mask, unlike other ghouls. Sje raised Juuzou Suzuya as her human pet and abused him. 

Tsuneyoshi Washuu (和修 常吉, Washū Tsuneyoshi)

Tsuneyoshi Washuu was a ghoul who was known for his strength. He was often called Demon Tsune (鬼常, Oni Tsune). He was the chairman of Commission of Counter Ghoul. He had many illegitimate children, including  Kishou Arima, Kichimura Washuu, Hairu Ihei and Rize Kamishiro.
