Cherry Blossom Update
Cherry blossoms in central Tokyo have officially begun to bloom, with the announcement made around 2 p.m. on March 24. This news was met with enthusiastic applause from spectators gathered near Yasukuni Shrine in Chiyoda Ward. According to information provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), six blossoms were observed on the Somei-Yoshino cherry tree.
This year’s bloom is five days earlier compared to last year and aligns with historical averages. I anticipate that the trees will reach full bloom within approximately a week. The JMA indicated that warm, moist air moving in from the south will likely keep temperatures elevated in central Tokyo, promoting a quicker blooming process.
While rain is forecasted for March 29, the following Sunday is expected to feature clear and sunny skies, creating optimal conditions for enjoying the cherry blossoms. On the same day, blooming was also confirmed in Nagasaki, Miyazaki, and 鹿児島, further indicating the spread of spring across the nation.
Notably, the first sakura blooms in Kochi and Kumamoto were reported a day earlier, on March 23.

To enhance the cherry blossom experience, I recommend exploring the Japan Sakura Map. It’s an interactive resource showcasing images of cherry blossoms from various locations across the country.
