Live Action Castlevania All Female Stage Adaptation
Japan’s Takarazuka Revue is well-known for its extravagant stage productions, often showcasing dramatic narratives filled with intense emotions and challenging situations.
This all-female theater company specializes in musicals where the characters navigate perilous challenges, using song as their primary means of expression.
This summer, the Takarazuka Revue will present its inaugural adaptation of the iconic video game series, Castlevania.
Titled 悪魔城ドラキュラ: Awakening in the Moonlight, it draws inspiration from the critically acclaimed 1997 title, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

The Japanese title, Gekka no Kakusei, subtly echoes this heritage, allowing fans to connect with both the game and the performance.
The central figure in this adaptation is Alucard, the conflicted son of Dracula.
Alucard collaborates with a group of vampire hunters to thwart his father’s dark intentions.
Sea Towaki, a leading actress from the Flower Troupe, will take on the role of Alucard.
Alongside her is Misaki Hoshizora, portraying Maria, a character known for her engaging bird-themed attacks from Symphony of the Night and her earlier appearance in Rondo of Blood.
The excitement surrounding the cast’s initial costumes has sparked considerable buzz among fans.
Social media reactions highlight the anticipation, with comments such as:
- “This looks incredible.”
- “Now that is COOL.”
- “They both look so lovely.”
Questions arise regarding other characters, with fans wondering if figures like Death or Richter will also make an appearance.
What sets Awakening in the Moonlight apart is its original storyline, crafted by Kei Suzuki, who serves as both the writer and director.
Suzuki’s extensive history with Takarazuka, beginning in 1999, includes a variety of fantasy narratives and video game adaptations.
His experience should contribute significantly to creating a compelling and unique interpretation of the 悪魔城ドラキュラ mythos.
The performance is set to debut at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture, running from June 7 to July 20.
Following this, the show will transfer to the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater in Yurakucho, where it will be staged from August 16 to September 28.
With ticket prices ranging from 3,500 yen (approximately USD 24) にしています。 12,500 yen, there are options for various budget levels, reflecting the tiered seating arrangements available.
Konami, the publisher behind the 悪魔城ドラキュラ franchises, has acknowledged the play by tweeting its promotional poster in English.
This suggests an awareness of potential international interest.
While Takarazuka has previously performed in the United States, Castlevania: Awakening in the Moonlight will be limited to its two Japanese venues for the time being.
Ticket sales for the general public will begin on May 17 for the performances in Hyogo, with sales for the Tokyo shows starting on July 13.
Interested attendees can purchase tickets through the Takarazuka Revue’s official website.
